Who wouldn't like to have a pet? Considering adopting one? You'd be entering a group that includes over 68 percent of U.S. households, each owning at least one pet as per the 2017-2018 APPA Survey. If you're interested in becoming a member of this group, it's crucial to think over the choice thoroughly.

Even when you're completely sure that you're prepared to adopt a pet, it's likely that there are crucial aspects you've overlooked. Are you fully aware of the responsibilities involved in looking after your preferred pet? Do you understand how to locate nearby shelters where you might meet a lifelong animal companion? Prior to deciding on your upcoming pet, educate yourself regarding the complexities of pet adoption.

1. Go in With an Open Mind

It's likely that you've envisioned a certain type of pet you wish to adopt. You likely hold some preferences for the kind of animal; for instance, you might be set on getting a cat, a dog, or possibly a bird. Similar to others, your interest might be in adopting a young puppy or kitten, and you certainly would want a pet that is healthy.

With everything taken into account, pets of every age, breed, shape, and size merit a caring home. Your options will be confined to the animals available at the shelter on your visit, and maintaining an open mind is crucial as you evaluate them. Dismissing an older animal or one with specific health issues might lead you to overlook a remarkable chance that could benefit both the pet and yourself. Thus, stay receptive to adopting animals that may not initially meet your specific preferences.

2. Take Your Time Making a Decision

Simply because you immediately connect with a specific animal at the shelter, it doesn't imply you ought to adopt it without further consideration. Additionally, feeling prepared to adopt a pet does not necessarily indicate that you truly are ready. Reflect on these aspects and allocate ample time and careful deliberation to the matter prior to reaching a conclusion:

  • Why do you want to adopt a pet? Remember that a pet is more than just a constant companion. They have needs too. Even the best cat or dog in the world won’t magically make your life wonderful.
  • Do you have time to care for a pet? Do you have enough free time in your life to devote to a pet? Will that continue to be true for the foreseeable future?
  • Is your living situation conducive to pet ownership? Is your home suitable for the pet of your choice? If you rent, are pets even allowed?
  • Are you prepared to deal with challenges? A pet is a living, breathing being. Medical emergencies and other bumps along the way are sure to occur. Will you be able to face them personally and financially?
  • Are you adopting for life? Finally, are you truly prepared to care for your pet for the rest of its life?

3. Make Sure You Can Afford a Pet

Amid the joy of bringing a new pet into your home, it's simple to underestimate the significant amount of money you'll end up spending on them over time. Even without the intention of "spoiling" your pet, the expenses tied to pet ownership can be substantial. Several typical expenses involved in the adoption and maintenance of different pets are as follows:

  • Fish: A new fish can be had for free, but exotic species can run into the several thousands of dollars. A basic freshwater aquarium setup will set you back about $300.
  • Birds: You can spend anywhere from $10 to upwards of $800 for a pet bird depending on the type of bird, according to The Spruce Pets. Expect to pay around $65 per month on food, medicine and supplies for your feathered friend.
  • Cats: You will pay $600 to $1,100 in your first year of owning a cat, including adoption fees and vaccinations according to Money Under 30’s estimates. Thereafter, expect to pay $375 to $750 a year for the necessities.
  • Dogs: The average cost per year of owning a small- or medium-sized dog is $500 to $875, PetPlace reports. Expect to pay closer to $700 to $875 per year to support a larger dog.

4. Research All the Needs of the Pet You Want

An additional motive for delaying the adoption of a pet is the tendency to quickly choose a pet without fully understanding the necessary care commitments. Are you ready to manage the requirements and expenses associated with the specific pet you wish to adopt? Several routine needs and their corresponding costs comprise:

  • Initial Medical Exam – $70 for cats, $130 for dogs
  • Spay or Neuter – $145 for cats, $200 for dogs
  • Leash or Collar – $10 for cats, $30 for dogs
  • Pet Carrier – $40 for cats, $60 for dogs
  • License – $15
  • Training – $125
  • Microchipping – $45

5. Do Your Research on Local Shelters

Besides everything else mentioned, it is essential to identify a trustworthy animal shelter to discover your new four-legged companion. When exploring nearby shelters, consider investigating the points below:

  • What kind of reputation does the facility have? Search online for reviews from others who have adopted pets from the facility.
  • How is the overall cleanliness of the shelter? It should look and smell clean.
  • Is there enough light and ventilation in the shelter, or does it seem dingy and dank?
  • What are the employees like? From the technicians to the higher-ups, do they seem to genuinely care about the animals that are under their charge? Do they seem knowledgeable about the pets that they are trying to find homes for?

Acquiring a pet is a delightful event, yet it's a decision that demands serious consideration. By not rushing and thoroughly contemplating your choice, you increase the chances of selecting a pet that you will cherish and look after adequately.
